For the Abbott family, the sound of the rescue helicopter will always be tied to the day everything changed.
In July 2023, Riley was riding his dirt bike near his Hawarden home when he suffered a devastating crash. It was supposed to be a celebration for his dad Nick’s 40th birthday, but instead Riley’s parents found themselves watching the Westpac Rescue Helicopter land to help their son.
Riley’s injuries were serious, a dislocated hip and the top of his femur shattered. He was flown to Christchurch Hospital by the Canterbury Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew using Night Vision Goggles, vital equipment that enables 24/7 response.
After months of recovery and ongoing complications, including early arthritis, Riley now faces a full hip replacement at just 17. But that hasn’t stopped him. In February, Riley and his parents completed the Coast to Coast multisport race as a relay team. Riley cycled 140km and raised $3,500 for the Canterbury Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
Riley’s strength, courage, and determination are a tribute to what’s possible when help arrives fast. His story is a powerful reminder of why the rescue helicopter matters, and why every supporter plays a part in saving lives.
